GC’s business management major is a branch of the business department at GC. It allows students to gain a better understanding of how to run a company, with a main focus on entrepreneurship. It provides hands-on experience in running a business and provides students with leadership roles through involvement in GC Entrepreneurs, the entrepreneurship club.
Payton Dromey, a sophomore business management major, plans to open up her own bakery in the future. She believes that the business management major is the perfect way to reach her goals in an academic setting.
Students take courses in accounting, business, management, marketing and logistics. Through these courses, students can gain knowledge and experience in all aspects of a business. There are also three optional concentrations you can add on top of the major: logistics and transportation, human resources and sales. Students also have the option of adding management as a minor — as long as they are a current business major at GC.
“The business management major is the most overarching business major,” Dromey said. “Business management majors have to take a myriad of business classes versus just a focus on marketing or something else. We have to do a little bit of everything, so we know what it looks like to manage a little bit of everything.”
With this major, it is encouraged that students get involved at GC through clubs and organizations. Students can network and gain more opportunities to learn through involvement on campus. Dromey makes sure that she is involved in multiple leadership roles at GC.
“I’m the president of the entrepreneurship club,” Dromey said. “I’m also a leader at Kudzu, which is a Christian ministry on campus, and I’m on the baking team. I’m also the chaplain of Kappa Delta. They each allow me to have a place of leadership and show me what it looks like to run a business/company by running a club. I run meetings, keep people on task and keep people feeling like they are doing and accomplishing something.”
Gaining connections and getting involved on campus is one of Dromey’s biggest pieces of advice for freshmen.
“Don’t be afraid to talk to people,” Dromey said. “You can learn from any situation of leadership. You just have to make the time to get plugged in and be a leader. If you’re a management major, you should be in leadership positions.”
GC had a total of 6,811 students across both graduate and undergraduate programs during the Fall 2023 semester. Many students, like Dromey, looked at campus size when deciding on a college. With a smaller campus size, students are more likely to get to know their professors personally and not just be a number in a classroom.
“I knew I wanted to come to a school where I could be poured into versus a school where I’m just a number,” Dromey said. “I have the opportunity to actually get to know my professors, and I’m able to have these relationships. They are so knowledgeable, and they also have just really good personalities. I know Dr. Duesing and Dr. Risvold have been very encouraging to me, and they allow opportunities for me to grow in the business management major.”
Although Dromey is a sophomore at GC, she has ambitious goals for her future and what she will do with this major.
“My main career path is definitely an entrepreneurship route, with wanting to renovate a bus into a bakery,” Dromey said. “It will take a lot of work, but it’s definitely something I’m willing to put the effort into.”
Business management at GC has prepared Dromey for her future by providing her with knowledge, connections and leadership roles. These attributes of the major will set her apart from others in a job setting when she graduates.
