Redshirt guard and senior Myra Strickland recently achieved a major career milestone during her time at GC, becoming a 1000-point scorer. This is Strickland’s second 1000-point career, as she also reached this accolade in her time at Norcross High School, along with 7A all-region and county first-team honors. She came to GC from Division 1 Winthrop University, where she played for three years and led the team as a scorer in the 2021-22 season.
With impressive play in the last couple of weeks, Strickland scored her 1000th collegiate career point in a win against USC Aiken and earned back-to-back Zaxby’s Player of the Week awards along the way. GC won a close game against USC Aiken by a score of 81-78, in which Strickland dropped a season-high 23 points on her way to reaching the milestone.
“It was definitely an amazing feeling,” Strickland said. “Not every player gets to experience a milestone like that in their career, so I thank God and was extremely blessed to hit the mark. I had a big support system behind me, which included my family and teammates, so it was special for me.”
Strickland averaged 18 points over a two-game span and 15 points over a two-game span the week before to win her awards.
“I will continue to give my 100% in practice and games and put in extra work outside of practice,” Strickland said. “With the support of my coaches and teammates, I’m going to strive to stay consistent and contribute to the team in whatever way necessary.”
Amelia Wylly, a junior forward, describes Strickland as a determined teammate.
“She is always working hard and thinks of the team before herself,” Wylly said. “I’ve loved playing with her and watching her excel on the court.”
While it is no mystery that Strickland can score in basketball, she also excels in the unkept statistic of off-the-court performance.
Alexa Geary, a junior guard, stated that not only does Strickland make an impact on the court but off the court as well.
“She brings so many things to the team,” Geary said. “She is always positive, always giving everything she has, always there for the team and gets the team hyped up.”
As a teammate, Strickland brings not only a competitive edge and positive energy but also contagious laughter.
“She is an amazing teammate,” Geary said. “She is always supportive, always making the team laugh — with her laugh, mostly — and loves to push the team, which is something we need.”
With the season heating up and the PBC tournament on the horizon, the team will work hard alongside Strickland, who has made it clear that she will do everything in her power to win games and continue adding points to her impressive career total.
“I feel positive and hopeful going into the rest of the season,” Strickland said. “I have a lot of talented teammates, and I believe we can have a successful rest of the season if we continue to work hard day in and out and buy into everything our coaches give us.”
