Governor Brian Kemp signed a bill Monday that will force insurance companies to provide mental health or substance abuse coverage.

“Today we take the next step, a monumental step toward a Georgia where every person receives the help they need to fight and overcome whatever personal problem they may face. Today we make sure they do not fight alone,” Kemp said.

The law will forgive student loan debt for mental health professionals in undeserved areas, and those studying to become a professional.

Speaker Ralston said it may cost an extra $200 million in spending, but the benefits are worth it.

Georgia ranks low statewide when it comes to mental health treatment and has a high number of those who struggle with their mental health.
